Mulege Magic
56A magical tropical vista awaits!
Two years ago, my boyfriend and I decided to get away from the typical Canadian winters we had endured for years. When we left, we weren't sure where we were going or what the trip would bring. We only knew that we wanted to go somewhere it didn't snow.
We headed south, and a few weeks later, we drove into Mulege. We were tired and exhausted from the journey and decided that this would be a perfect place to stop for a few days to get some much needed rest before continuing on. We initially paid for a three day stopover, and, within a month had signed a year lease!! How did this happen you wonder?
Well, Mulege is a place that is for the most part undiscovered. Many people simply bypass this quaint, Mexican town as they head to the larger, better known cities such as Cabo San Lucas or Todo Santos. I feel sorry for those that miss the magic that awaits them in Mulege! This sleepy town has the potential to erase all your cares and worries, if you will let it.
To love Mulege for what it is, I think that you need to pack your watch in a place where you can't find it. Nothing ever takes place here on time because everyone elses watch is also taking a vacation. Usually, the first few days, visitors to the area are easily identified. They seem uptight in comparisson to the rest of the town. After these first days pass, you can literally watch the visitors transform into calmer, more relaxed beings. What could cost thousands at a spa, resort or on a cruise happens naturally here.
What is so special about this town?
In some ways, I think it is special because it is undiscovered. It has none of the busy-ness of Cabo or any of the other resort towns. Time is certainly not of the essence here, and every now and then, I think it is important to throw away that day planner and get out of the mundane lifestyles that we lead.
The people also make this town what it is. If you are old enough, you will remember the days when you could ask your neighbour for a cup of sugar. These times are remembered in Mulege. As you walk down the street, people of all walks of life greet you with a smile and a wave. If you break down here, there is no question if someone will come to your assistance.
I could go on for hours about this fantastic little town. But then, you wouldn't have the opportunity to explore it yourself! Make it a destination, but remember, time fades away here. Prepare to find the real you in this tropical oasis where the river meets the lovley Sea of Cortez and the sun almost never ceases to shine! Be sure to visit before this town is swept away by tourism and it's true Mexican heritage is lost forever!
